Notes on the Memory Curriculum:
I have included grade level memory requirements for the catechism and scripture. The full text of the scripture is included, so hopefully that will be helpful for some people.
Here is what I was thinking when
I put this together:
- Voyages derived most of the memory from the Bible stories they were
reading that week. It did include scripture and catechism parts.
Therefore, schools still have the option to just follow that format.
- My memory curriculum includes catechism parts and scripture as well.
However, the scripture component does not come from the Bible stories
being read, but instead comes from the catechism.
- We want students to learn stories, but I think we want them to memorize
verses that support what they believe and will speak to them in time of
trouble. I obviously could not include all the scripture references in
the catechism, but I did go through and painstakingly pick out the 300 or
so that I would want my own children to know someday. The number in front
of each scripture reference corresponds to its reference number in the
catechism.
- I think less is more. During the 8 year curriculum, students go through
each of the six chief parts of the catechism at least twice.
- They will also go through all the scripture (about 300 references) by the
end of 6th grade. The 7th and 8th grade scripture will be selected verses
they have already learned at an earlier date.
- I really tried to include a realistic amount of memory work for each
grade. Some will think it is not enough and others will think it is too
much. I went grade by grade and tried to estimate how many weeks it would
take children to get through the catechism part of the memory. I then
included a certain number of scripture verses depending on how many weeks
were left. The Voyages curriculum has students learning two references a
week. I think one reference a week is not quite enough, and so I shot for
something in between. For example over 15 weeks, there may be 22-23
scripture references to memorize.
- The selection of hymns to be memorized should be done in consultation with the Music Director or Cantor at a given church and school. Hymns were written to be sung; therefore it is the recommendation that the entire school learn hymns together as part of their chapel and Sunday morning worship.
- The six chief parts of the catechism work on a rotating basis as well, again in an effort to help students truly put these to memory.
